"But, I'm not an artist"

If I had a dollar for everyone that said to me, “I’m not an artist…” this is where I usually cut them off.

I get it.

I used to say I’m not a writer. I’m not a photographer. I’m not an artist.

Then I stopped ‘not’ing.

People aren’t comfortable with the labels because they have meanings attached that make them feel less. Comparisons get made. It can be heartbreaking to not ‘not.’

If you don’t want to be an artist. If you don’t think you are very creative. You aren’t sure you can draw. That’s all ok. Art is meant for everyone, and we all do it for different reasons.

Taking an art class can be an incredibly rewarding and enriching activity, even if your goal isn’t to be a professional artist. Here are some compelling reasons to dive in:

1. Enhances Creativity: Art encourages creative thinking, opening your mind to new possibilities and problem-solving approaches.

2. Reduces Stress: Art can be very meditative, offering a way to focus, relax, and recharge. Many people find that drawing, painting, or working with their hands helps them decompress.

3. Improves Focus and Patience: Art projects require concentration and dedication, helping you develop a more mindful approach. Working on detailed pieces can help build patience and perseverance.

4. Boosts Confidence: Learning new skills and creating tangible results can give you a sense of accomplishment, boosting your confidence in your creative and non-creative pursuits.

5. Promotes Self-Expression: Art is a powerful medium for expressing emotions and perspectives, allowing you to communicate in ways words sometimes can’t.

6. Enhances Problem-Solving Skills: Artistic projects encourage you to work through challenges, like combining colors, fixing mistakes, or trying new techniques.

7. Builds Community: Art classes are a great way to meet like-minded people, share ideas, and develop friendships with those who share similar interests.

8. Develops Fine Motor Skills: Working with different mediums (like clay, paint, or charcoal) improves your hand-eye coordination and motor skills.

9. Provides a New Perspective: Art often involves looking at subjects from different angles, enhancing your observational skills and helping you see the world in a new light.

10. Encourages Personal Growth: Artistic projects can serve as a journey of self-discovery, as you experiment and push your creative boundaries.

Art classes are so much more than simply "learning to draw" or "paint"; they can be a fulfilling addition to personal and professional development!
