Art and yoga may seem like separate worlds—one rooted in physical movement, the other in creative expression. But at their core, both are meditative practices that help us explore, process, and express our inner world.
Be it a brushstroke or a deep breath, both yoga and art invite us to be present, to embrace the unknown, and to express what words often cannot. Still unsure? Here’s how these two disciplines intertwine.
Creativity often feels like an unpredictable force—sometimes flowing effortlessly, other times frustratingly out of reach. Whether you’re a painter, writer, musician, or any kind of creator, I’d bet you have experienced creative blocks that leave you feeling disconnected and frustrated. But what if the key to unlocking creativity wasn’t in your mind, but rather in your body?
Yoga, an ancient practice that unites movement, breath, and mindfulness, has profound benefits beyond flexibility and relaxation. It nurtures a state of openness, clarity, and flow—essential ingredients for creative expression.
The Practice of Letting Go
Yoga teaches us non-attachment—the ability to move through emotions and experiences without clinging to them. The same lesson applies to creativity. Every artist knows the struggle of perfectionism and self-criticism, but just as we learn to accept where our body is in a pose without judgment, we can learn to accept and honor our creative process. If you have ever listened to the Art Happens Here Podcast, you have heard Ria and I talk about the flow. Some artists also call it being "in the zone"—a state of effortless creation where ideas seem to pour out naturally. This is similar to the flow state achieved in yoga, where movement and breath synchronize seamlessly. Poses that encourage grounding (like Tree Pose or Warrior) and fluidity (like Cat-Cow or Sun Salutations) help artists tap into that rhythm, making creativity feel less forced and more organic.
The Art of Presence
In yoga, we are taught to focus on the present moment—the rhythm of the breath, the way the body moves, and the stillness between transitions. The same is true for art. Whether painting, writing, or playing music, creativity thrives in the here and now. Both practices pull us out of overthinking and into a state of presence, where true expression can flow freely.
